Canons mark royal birthday celebrations

A customary 21 canon-salute echoed near the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital at 8am yesterday.

The canon shots were in honour of the 74th birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Military Police with 14 RBAF Military Police personnel was led by Captain Haji Alihassan bin Haji Japar. When the clock struck eight, 21 canon shots were fired to mark His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s birthday celebration. Unlike previous years, this year’s celebration was held in a modest ceremony as the country is practising social and physical distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Salminan bin Haji Burut and Deputy Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) Abdul Walid bin Haji Matassan attended the ceremony.
