Five medical students of the Volunteerism Among Youth for Elderly Care (VAYEC) under Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) recently handed over BND2,000 worth of medical necessities to Pusat Amal Cerah Sejahtera (PACS).

PACS is a centre set up by the Ministry of Health (MoH) to provide nursing care and rehabilitation for the elderly, especially those who are homebound.

VAYEC supervisor Dr Deeni Rudita bin Idris presented the contribution to Acting Chief Executive Officer of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital Abdul Haziz bin Haji Ahad. The donation comprised wheelchairs, diapers, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, stationery and other necessities needed by the centre.

The Volunteerism Among Youth for Elderly Care is a project by a group of third-year medical students at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences of UBD which aims at raising awareness of the benefits of volunteering while introducing Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Volunteer Unit to improve the quality of elderly care through educating volunteers and caregivers on the proper methods of caregiving, to increase public awareness on the common age-related health conditions such as osteoporosis, dementia and diabetes as well as the importance of a healthy lifestyle among the elderly, and to raise funds to support the needs of the elderly.

The donation was acquired through the proceeds raised during events carried out between August 7 and 18 last year.
