Sweet success with banana dessert

When it comes to dessert, we can’t help but think of the sweet delicacies to savour, from ice cream to crepes. With that in mind, one ingredient that offers endless culinary possibilities is banana, where the recipes are countless.

Poppis.Choc was established on social media as the first to introduce ‘poppis’, a combination of popia (spring roll wrapper) with banana. In an interview with the Bulletin, the founder Dayangku Siti Aisah binti Pengiran Haji Masshor said she actually planned to open her business two years ago when she attended a workshop with inspiring women with amazing and creative ideas but only managed to open up her business this year.

Poppis is banana wrapped in a thin spring roll wrapper before it is fried and drizzled in her homemade chocolate sauce.

She said that customers can pick different toppings including Kitkat, marshmallow and crispy rice, biscoff and Ferrero Rocher.

“I was in this business because there is demand for snacks with a crunchy texture that are also sweet and savoury. Bruneians also love eating cucur (fritters).

“At the time, my mother was making chocolate with her own recipe. From there, we started experimenting and were able to come up with Poppis.choc. We decided to improvise our knowledge about chocolate by attending some workshops outside Brunei. After we were done with our workshops, we decided to open Poppis.choc.”

Dayangku Siti Aisah said she is grateful that her family and friends supported her.

“I am grateful to Allah the Almighty for giving me the strength to expand the business further.” She has been utilising social media such as Instagram to market her business and has gained more than 5,000 followers.

“However, our journey wasn’t all smooth sailing. Just recently, my Instagram account was hacked and it was devastating for my team.

“I had to start over. We created a new account and plan to make a great comeback.

“We are thankful to our loyal customers who have stayed with us throughout the difficult time. I deeply appreciate their loyalty,” she said.

She said that being a full-time business owner is a challenge as all responsibility falls on her.

“It was not easy but it is not impossible if you are committed. Our success didn’t happen overnight.”

She plans to open a branch for Poppis.Choc soon while trying to create a new menu for the future.

“I would like to advise those who want to start a business to be totally committed.

Insya Allah, all the hardwork will be worth it.

“Remember, nothing is impossible if you put total effort on what you are doing. Never give up and always stay positive.

“And don’t forget to always keep track on financial management as that is the most crucial thing in any business.”

“To be successful, you also have to invest a lot of time, energy, knowledge and money, ” she said.
