A 50-year-old local man who holds a notorious record of theft dating back over 30 years ago was sentenced to 24 months’ jail after he pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court last Saturday for stealing a pair of shoes.

Acting Senior Magistrate Pengiran Hazirah binti Pengiran Haji Mohd Yusof heard from Deputy Public Prosecutor Syazwani binti Jumat who revealed in court that the defendant was walking around the Kiulap commercial area at 9pm on June 18.

He noticed the sole of his shoe was damaged and walked towards a building where he went up the stairs to the first floor and rested at the landing of a tuition school.

The defendant saw a pair of shoes and took it, leaving his own pair and fled the scene.

At 9.15pm, the owner of the pair of shoes finished his evening class to find that the shoes had gone missing.

The victim requested to view the CCTV footage from the camera installed outside the tuition school.

The footage showed the defendant in action and prompted the victim to call 993 leading to the defendant’s arrest.
