Minister visits flood-hit Ulu Belait

Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong led a contingent during a visit to Ulu Belait yesterday to assess the situation faced by residents affected by flooding.

The minister was welcomed by Belait District Officer and Belait District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) Chairman Ramlee bin Haji Jamudin at the Merangking Hall.

Permanent secretaries and acting deputy permanent secretaries at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), permanent secretaries at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; Acting Director of the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), Penghulu and village heads of the affected areas and officers at the Belait District Office were also present.

The minister was briefed by Ramlee on the current situation faced by the residents in Mukim Bukit Sawat, parts of Mukim Merangking and Mukim Sukang. Residents have no access-ways as roads were blocked by flooding and traversing the flooded area was only possible by boat.

Action was taken to help combat the situation including continued monitoring of the water level and the distribution of basic necessities. The briefing touched on the efforts made by the NDMC and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces who used boats used to transport provisions
and residents.

The minister travelled by boat, starting at the boat jetty near the Orang Kaya Pemancha Berandai (OKPB) Primary School in Kampong Bukit Sawat, to visit the affected areas of Kandol and Kampong Bukit Sawat.
