Two attempts to smuggle contraband including 420 cartons of cigarettes through Brunei waters was thwarted during a joint operation by personnel of the Marine Police, Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and the Royal Customs and Excise Department last Saturday.

Enforcement officers found two suspicious looking boats trying to enter Brunei waters from Kampong Limpaku Pinang, Malaysia during the operation at the vicinity of the Menunggol Laut area, according to the RBPF.

A chase ensued and both boats were found abandoned on the river stream with the drivers missing. Both boats were towed and surrendered to the police.

Apart from cigarettes of various brands, 24 bottles of liquor and 25 boxes of raw chicken wings were found and handed over to the Royal Customs and Excise Department for further investigations.

The RBPF said enforcement agencies will continuously conduct surveillance in tracking and combatting criminal activities and urged the public to cooperate by relaying information on criminal activities.
