The Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed an eight months’ jail sentence to an Indonesian domestic helper who stole from her employer.
Susanti, 35, pleaded guilty to the charge levelled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Syazwani binti Jumat whose facts of the case stated that the defendant had been employed as a maid since July 2019.
Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu further heard from the prosecution that the defendant was preparing food for her employer on June 22 when she noticed her employer’s wallet in the drawer of a cabinet in the living room, and stole a BND100 note from the wallet, which she then hid in her wardrobe in her bedroom.
Later that same day, her employer noticed the money missing and the defendant was confronted by.
She confessed to having stolen the money when her employer discovered the stolen BND100 note in the defendant’s bedroom.
While handing the sentence, the Magistrate said that the defendant was in a position of trust, and had no respect for the law and her employers which warrants for a deterrent sentence to reflect the nature of the offence.
