Local man charged with threatening health worker

A 44-year-old local man yesterday denied charges in the Magistrate’s Court of intimidation, negligence and making verbal threats to a health officer.

Azlan bin Awang Damit pleaded not guilty to committing three offences under Section 506 for criminal intimidation, Section 269 for negligently committing an act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life, and Section 352 for assault.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Raihan Nabilah binti Haji Ahmad Ghazali informed court that police investigations revealed that the defendant on the first allegation had threatened to hurt a care worker at a welfare home complex on February 10, 2020.

The second allegation is that he negligently committed an act knowing that he could have spread the infection of a dangerous disease to others around him on April 4, 2020.

The third charge purports the defendant of having assaulted a Ministry of Health personnel by verbally threatening him while armed with a pocket knife on May 3, 2020.

Chief Magistrate Pengiran Masni binti Pengiran Haji Bahar adjourned the case to June 29, 2020 for trial dates to be fixed and released the defendant on bail of BND5,000 or two local sureties with strict conditions.

The charges carry penalties of up to three years’ jail and a fine for the first charge, jail of up to five years and a fine for the second charge and a year’s jail and a fine for the third charge.
