Litterbugs slapped with compound fines

Two companies and five individuals were each slapped with a compound fine for violating the Minor Offences Act Chapter 30 Section 12 (1)(a) (d) for disposing rubbish, construction waste and cigarette butts in public places in Gadong, Kiulap and Pancha Delima areas.

The offenders were caught during Operasi Bersih by the Law Enforcement Unit of Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department recently.

The two companies, HK Amirah and Aisafli Contractor, were issued with a compound fine of BND500 each. Meanwhile Safeermon Parammal and Shajahan Ummer Kutty from India, Edwin Almario Bacsafra from the Philippines, Tang Lung Kiong from Malaysia, and Roihan Akbar Adam from Indonesia received BND100 compound fines each.

The offenders were ordered to settle their fines within seven days. Failure to do so will result in a further fine of BND1,000, or a month’s imprisonment, for the first convicted offence.

For subsequent offences, the penalty is BND3,000 fine and a prison term of up to three months. Business establishments and the public are reminded not to dispose rubbish in public areas. BSB Municipal Department urged the public to report violators.
