The meeting was held online at the LegCo Building, which began with a welcoming speech by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc as the Chairman of ASEAN, followed by a speech by Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan as the President of AIPA.
The President of AIPA addressed concerns surrounding the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in ASEAN member countries. The President was optimistic that ASEAN will be able to handle the outbreak, while restoring socio-economic activities for the ASEAN community to continue to move forward. The President stated that AIPA welcomed the ASEAN Special Summit on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and acknowledged ASEAN’s integrated efforts in addressing the related challenges.
The president also expressed support for the members of the AIPA Parliament in implementing the government’s initiative in addressing the epidemic, improving national preparedness in emergency situations, ensuring the well-being of the people, restoring economic activity, maintaining stability in countries and even in the region.
While recognising AIPA as a regional legislative body which plays an important role in ASEAN integration and promotes cooperation in various fields, the President also underscored the need for AIPA and ASEAN to continue to develop deeper and practical partnerships to make the ASEAN community more prosperous, sustainable, cohesive and responsive.
As the leader of the ASEAN Parliament, AIPA appreciated ASEAN with its 2020 ‘Cohesive and Responsive’ theme that hopes to work closely with ASEAN to develop independent, dynamic, united and fast-growing countries in Southeast Asia as ASEAN plays an important role in regional and global architecture.
At the meeting, ASEAN heads of state with AIPA representatives also discussed related regional and international issues. It is hoped that AIPA and ASEAN will continue to grow and develop in a stronger and more practical partnership and believe that sharing and trust will lead ASEAN towards a brighter new development.
