IRISH MIRROR – There was no nine-carrot wedding ring, but an adorable video of an Irish hotel’s “bunny wedding” has gone viral. The unexpected feel-good story at Kilkenny’s Newpark Hotel put a smile on the face of thousands as Bugsy and Roger tied the knot.
The usual busy summer season for the hospitality sector has been delayed until July at the earliest due to the coronavirus lockdown, and hotel workers across the country have been left with no guests to cater for.
But while the Newpark Hotel may be closed to humans, a skeleton crew of staff still have to look after animals on the onsite farm.
And to celebrate its scheduled re-opening on July 20, hotel Manager Niall Dunne planned the unconventional nuptials last month. After finding her ideal man on plentyofbunnies.com, and a Lady and the Tramp-inspired first date, Bugsy finally took Roger’s paw in marriage.
And the video was a big hit on social media, with more than 120,000 people watching the charming love story on the hotel’s Facebook page.
One fan asked, “Can I book into the bunny suite please?”, while another wrote, “I heard the honeymoon was unbelievable, they were at it like rabbits.” Manager Niall, 37, said filming the short clips has kept spirits up during a very uncertain time for staff.
He told the Irish Mirror, “It’s been surreal for us. What we do is look after guests, that’s our job.
“When you take away that main ingredient it’s a very scary atmosphere to walk into a hotel that’s usually bustling and suddenly there’s nobody there.
“We are planning to re-open, which is great, but for the time being the videos are keeping us sane.”
