The Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) arrested a permanent resident in connection with the robbery of a hitchhiker in Seria, Belait District.

The victim, a foreign citizen working for a Belait-based company, was hitching a ride near a bus stop in Panaga at 4.30pm on May 29, when the suspect allegedly stopped and offered to drive him home.

Acting Commanding Officer of the Belait Police District Superintendent Handrie bin Haji Amin said the suspect then pulled out a knife and used it to demand cash from the passenger he had just picked up.

The victim was forced to hand over a smartphone, as he had no wallet or cash on him at the time.

The 35-year-old suspect was taken into custody on June 22, following an investigation conducted by the RBPF.

On June 24, he was charged in the Magistrate’s Court under Section 392, Chapter 22 of the Criminal Penal Code. The charge carries the penalty of no more than 30 years’ jail term and no less than 12 strokes of the cane.

The suspect is currently being remanded at the Jerudong Prison.
