The building of a school canteen in Kampong Sungai Akar was damaged following an explosion caused by a leakage in a gas cylinder yesterday.

Six firefighters from the Berakas Fire Station led by DSO Tonny rushed to the scene on receiving an emergency call around 1.48am.

The firefighters found four exploded cylinders at the canteen and with the help of a fire extinguisher dismantled the gas regulator. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

The Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) urged the public to switch off electrical appliances before leaving the workplace and ensure the LPG cylinder hose and gas regulators are in good condition and accredited by Brunei Shell Marketing Sdn Bhd (BSM).

The department also said the public should check if the fire extinguishers are in proper working condition.

The FRD said electrical appliances should not be switched on when there is smell of gas. The public can contact 995 during an emergency.
