Face masks mandatory for students

It is now mandatory for students in Brunei Darussalam to wear a face mask at school to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar said that wearing a face shield will provide added protection.

“A face shield is often used by medical personnel mainly to protect them from aerosol exposure, especially among anaesthetist or an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist performing endoscopy. When their patients cough, the face shield will prevent the spray on their face,” he said.

“So for children, it is going to provide added protection. But what is important is the face mask, because if you just wear a face shield without the mask, you can protect aerosol coming to you, say if your friends are talking to you, but the droplets will go down. It doesn’t protect from droplets spreading in your space. I think it is important to wear a face mask. But, using a face shield is an added benefit.”
