China’s Beijing Guoan want foreign coach, players back for campaign restart

BEIJING (XINHUA) – Chinese Super League (CSL) side Beijing Guoan are planning to get their coach Bruno Genesio and five overseas players back to China, as the 2020 CSL campaign may restart in July.

Current restrictions on international travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic meant that many overseas citizens are currently unable to travel to China.

However, Dalian Pro head coach Rafa Benitez and his club’s three overseas players have returned to China by chartered plane, and Guangzhou Evergrande’s Brazilian midfielder Paulinho also flew back on a chartered plane. Beijing Guoan will follow Dalian Pro and Guangzhou Evergrande’s lead and hope to get Genesio and their foreign imports back to China in July, according to a source close to the club.

Guoan have conducted nucleic acid tests for COVID-19 on all team members, with all returning negative.

The 2020 CSL campaign, which was slated to start on February 22, has been delayed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, with a July restart having been mooted.
