The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) through the Community Development Department (JAPEM) launched the SMS Brunei Prihatin for Orphans Fund yesterday.
The launch was announced at a press conference chaired by Deputy Permanent Secretary (Community) at the MCYS Saidah binti Haji Wahid at Citra Budaya Hall of MCYS building. The SMS Brunei Prihatin campaign will be held from May 2 to July 31.
The deputy permanent secretary shared that last year, the 40-day SMS Brunei Prihatin campaign from May 2 to June 10, collected BND106,448.
The public can donate to the fund by sending an SMS with the word YATIM followed by the amount they wish to donate – BND1, BND5, BND10, BND15, BND20, BND50 or BND100 (without spaces) – to 38111 (for DST and Progresif users).
For example, to make a BND20 donation, the text should read YATIM20.
She said MCYS in collaboration with Brunei-Muara District Office, Belait District Office, Tutong District Office and Temburong District Office, Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) as well as Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) will hand over the donation to orphans nationwide via drive-through concept.
The drive-through centres for the respective districts are International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas for Brunei-Muara District; Setia Kenangan Hall for Tutong District; Kuala Belait Convention Hall for Belait District; and National Service Programme (PKBN) Building for Temburong District.
The hand over of the donation for all four districts will be held for two day on May 4-5 from 8am to noon.
Meanwhile, on May 6-8, the handing over of the donation will be held at all JAPEM branches throughout the country.
The deputy permanent secretary also urged cooperation from all parties to comply with the instructions and rules to ensure safety especially due to COVID-19 pandemic.
She advised the public receiving donation to practise social distancing.
She said only one representative from each family is allowed to receive the donation and those with breathing problem, fever, flu and cough including senior citizens with chronic disease, immune-compromised individuals such as those with kidney disease, lung problem, cancer and others; pregnant women and children under 12-years-old are not allowed.
Orphans or representative must bring the original documents including orphans card issued by JAPEM, identity card or birth certificates of the orphans and identity card of the representative.
The total number of registered orphans under JAPEM throughout the country is 4,436.
The donations that will be handed over are the collection from Orphans Fund under JAPEM totalling BND221,800, Brunei-Muara District Orphans Fund with BND42,720 and BIBD contributed BND221,800.
The public is encouraged to donate through Secretariat of Orphans Fund at JAPEM, Second Floor of MCYS Building in Jalan Kebangsaan or through SMS Brunei Prihatin.
