There has been an improvement in businesses in the Belait District since the closure of borders to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

This was said by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah during a press conference yesterday.

He said some businesses have reported a 30-per-cent increase in profits, which is an encouraging sign.

“If the public continues to support domestic businesses, it will help to create employment and improve the economy of the country,” he said, adding that he has observed the same trend in other districts.

He also noted a downward trend in money flowing out of the country. However, he said, it is still too early to ascertain the exact reduction in the flow.

“It takes time to monitor and track as well as collaborate with our neighbour to work out the numbers,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said there has been a surge in credit card use in the country, which is “in line with the nation’s drive towards a Smart Nation”.
