Foreign national fined for DUI

A foreign national caught driving under the influence of alcohol during a roadblock operation was ordered to pay a BND2,000 fine or face two months’ imprisonment in default by the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

According to the charge by the Police Prosecution Unit, Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), the defendant, Ariel Tolentino Sabado, 42, was detained during a joint operation conducted by the RBPF and Land Transport Department (JPD) at Jalan Tutong on January 28.

He was charged in court under Section 26 (1)(b) of the Road Traffic Act Chapter 68 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The defendant pleaded guilty and with evidence presented to the court, he was handed the fine and given time until May 28 to settle the fine.

He was released on court bail. The court also ordered for the defendant’s driving licence to be suspended for three years.

The prosecution was led by Inspector Hayati binti Tassim from the Police Prosecution Unit and the court was presided by Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu.
