In response to the concern raised by ‘Environmentally Conscious’ in the Borneo Bulletin on 9 May about the activity on Jalan Tengah. Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) would like to share that this project is an environmental initiative to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. BSP is embarking on an exciting renewable energy project.
BSP is supportive of green initiatives, one of which is to use more renewable energy within its oil and gas operations. Successful initiatives so far include the installation of solar lights and solar power on unmanned offshore platforms.
As further support to increase renewable energy uptake within its assets, BSP has recently taken the decision to invest in a flagship 3.3MegaWatt peak utility-scale solar PV plant in Belait.
This is a significant milestone for BSP as well as for the Belait District community. This flagship project will see the installation of almost 7,000 panels in total at a former BSP housing area on Jalan Tengah in Seria.
The low carbon electricity generated from the solar panels will offset some of the power used by the BSP Headquarters building on Jalan Utara in Panaga.
The solar power generated is equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 600 households per year.
Site clearance activities have commenced to make way for the construction of the solar plant.
In support of BSP’s commitment to safeguard the environment, for every tree removed, three trees will be replanted at a neighbouring site.
The installation of the solar plant is planned for completion by early 2021.
