The Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) advised the public to practise social distancing when celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri by ensuring the Ministry of Health (MoH) safety guidelines.
FRD Senior Superintendent Haji Afiq bin Haji Julah who shared the advice, quoting statistics said 30 calls involving house fires were received from January to April 2020.
The loss was estimated at BND1,160,930.
He said among the main causes of house fires were overloading electrical equipment, loose or outdated connections; grass fires, incendiary cases, leaving cooking unattended, and loose Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) hose.
The FRD urged the public not to leave cooking unattended and always check the safety of kitchen components such as LPG and others, refrain from open burning, avoid excessive use of electricity and to turn off unused electrical appliances.
The department also advised the public to ensure that wirings are in good condition and conduct inspections only by authorised and certified companies of the Department of Electrical Services.
It also stressed on the need to ensure that the house is equipped with fire safety equipment such as a fire extinguisher, fire blanket or smoke detector and not to leave senior citizens, special needs individual and young children alone.
