COVID-19 cases in Philippines climb to 8,488

MANILA (XINHUA) – The number of coronavirus disease cases in the Philippines climbed to 8,488, as the Department of Health (DoH) reported 276 new cases yesterday.

The DoH also reported that 10 more patients have died from the disease, bringing the country’s fatalities from the highly infectious disease to 568.

According to the DOH, 20 more COVID-19 patients have recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,043.

In an online media briefing, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said it is still early to say if the COVID-19 incidence in the country has already peaked after the lockdown was imposed six weeks ago.

“It’s quite risky for us to declare now that we are plateauing and that we really are reaching that peak. We are not still there,” she added.

Vergeire said that the government will continue its expanded COVID-19 testing in different areas of the country. “We expect the number (of cases) to increase because more people will be detected,” she said.
