PlayStation gamers looking for something new to play will find a variety of titles making their way onto the PlayStation 4 (PS4) this month.
Fast-paced, action-oriented strategy game John Wick Hex launched on the PS4 yesterday. In this game, you take on the role of John Wick, the professional hitman from the critically acclaimed film franchise of the same name.
Another upcoming title is Fury Unleashed, which is set for a May 8 release. A combo-driven roguelite action platformer, Fury Unleashed sees players explore the pages of a living comic book where ink is your most valuable resource and each room is a comic panel.
Also releasing on May 8 is SuperMash, in which you make games by mashing together two game genres. The base game features six classic genres to mix and match, namely: platformer, action adventure, shoot ‘em up, metroidvania, stealth and JRPG.
A remaster of Star Wars Episode 1: Racer has been delayed from its original PS4 release date of May 12 to May 26. Based on the podracing sequence from the movie Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the game sees players get to take control of their favourite podracers, with a total of 25 playable racers to select from, race tracks spanning eight unique worlds, podracer upgrade options as well as split-screen multiplayer.
Sports fans will get to swing for the fences in Super Mega Baseball 3 when it arrives on PS4 on May 13, featuring an all-new franchise mode, graphical enhancements and on-field additions such as pickoffs and situational player traits.
May 13 will also see the release of Potata: Fairy Flower, an adventure platformer focussed on the journey of a young witch exploring fairy forests.
Cyberpunk first-person shooter Ion Fury makes its way to PS4 on May 14. A prequel to 2016’s Bombshell, Ion Fury sees players take on the role of a bomb disposal expert who must fight through an army of cybernetically-enhanced soldiers in a futuristic dystopian city of Neo DC.
Meanwhile, those looking for something new to play with their PlayStation VR headsets will get to delve into Budget Cuts when it releases on May 15. As described by the developer Neat Corporation, “Budget Cuts is a VR stealth game where you dexterously zip, sneak or rambo your way forward through thrilling, oil-splatter filled combat.”
Also expected to release on May 15 is Dungeon of the Endless, a roguelike tower defence game developed by Amplitude Studios. Initially released on PC in 2014, iOS in 2015 and Xbox one in 2016, Dungeon of the Endless sees the player and their team of heroes protect the generator of their crashed ship while exploring an ever-expanding dungeon and facing waves of monsters.
May 18 will see the release of mini golf game Golf With Your Friends, which features seven 18-hole courses set across vibrant themes, 12-player multiplayer, customisable game modes and various modifiers.
Action title The Wonderful 101 Remastered is set to release on May 19 in North America, May 22 in Europe and June 11 in Japan. The game sees players take control of the Wonderful Ones – heroes from all over the world chosen to defend the Earth from extraterrestrial threats.
On May 21, a non-PSVR version of Firesprite’s survival horror roguelike The Persistance will arrive on the PS4. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Game Director of Firesprite Stuart Tilly said, “Bringing The Persistence to non-VR displays will allow even more people to discover the terror of space in this unique blend of roguelike and sci-fi horror.”
Another upcoming title for the PS4 next month is Maneater, an open world action RPG in which you play as a shark, starting as a small shark pup “tasked with surviving the harsh world while eating your way up the ecosystem”. Carrying the tagline “Eat. Explore. Survive”, Maneater launches on May 22.
Also launching on May 22 is open world action-adventure game Saints Row The Third Remastered. This remaster sees players explore the fictional city of Steelport, with the ultimate goal of leading the Third Street Saints gang to defeat its rivals in a city turf war.
Strategy roleplaying game Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen will be coming to both the PS4 and the PS Vita on May 26 (US) and May 29 (EU & ANZ). According to its official game page, “Prelude to the Fallen follows the story of a young man with no memories who awakens in a strange world. He is taken in by a tribe of kindhearted villagers, accepted as one of their own, and given the name ‘Hakuowlo’. When neighbouring nations begin to encroach on his village, Hakuowlo rises up against the tyrannical invaders, setting off on an unforgettable journey that lives on in the songs of legend.”
Also making its way to the PlayStation 4 on May 26 is Minecraft Dungeons – a dungeon crawler set in the Minecraft universe. In Minecraft Dungeons, players embark on a quest to save some villagers, going through various dungeons filled with treasure and various enemies, with the option to play solo solo or with up to three other friends.
Action roguelite farming simulator Atomicrops arrives on PS4 on May 28. As described on its website, in Atomicrops, “Cultivate ultra-GMO crops, scavenge the wastelands of the post apocalypse, recruit a herd of helpful farm animals and maybe even find love all while battling with swarms of mutated beasts to defend your farm; the last farm on Earth.”
Another upcoming PS4 title on May 28 is Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling, an adventure roleplaying game that follows three heroes on a quest in search of a treasure that can grant immortality. Combining colourful platforming with the heroes unique abilities as they explore a variety of areas, as well as turn-based battles.
Also set for release on May 28 is platform game Shantae and the Seven Sirens. The fifth entry in the Shantae series, the game centres on a half-genie named Shantae and her friends who have been invited to a tropical island to participate in a festival where, during a performance, the other half-genies in attendance disappear. Players go on a journey to search the island and a sunken city beneath it to find answers.
