A local man was handed a five-year jail sentence on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to charges related to theft in the Intermediate Court.
Judge Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Datu Jurasan Laila Diraja Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Kefli came to his decision after considering the long list of previous theft convictions Johari bin Haji Jaya holds.
This time around Johari, 31, had trespassed into a house at Kampong Biong, Jalan Rambai in Tutong between 5am and 6am on November 19, 2019 for theft.
He also misappropriated a car and switched its number plates to avoid detection on November 18, 2019. DPPs Hajah ‘Adzimah Mukarramah binti Haji Salleh and Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad said that the defendant was arrested as a result of police investigations following a report lodged by the car owner on his missing property.
The defendant admitted to trespassing into the house at Kampong Biong for theft.
Meanwhile, 35-year-old Awangku Abdul Fadzri bin Pengiran Abdul Karim has denied the sets of charges he faces in the same case as Johari.
Awangku Abdul Fadzri will have to prove his innocence in a trial fixed from May 18, 2020.
