A fire destroyed a house and two vehicles at the national housing scheme of Kampong Perpindahan Lambak Kanan on Monday night. This is the second house fire reported in the country in the month of Ramadhan.
The house owner, a local Malay man, and the seven occupants escaped unscathed.
According to a statement from the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) yesterday, a distress call was received at 9.52pm of a house fire at No 127, Simpang 125, Jalan 11, Kampong Perpindahan Lambak Kanan.
Twelve firefighters from the Lambak Kanan Fire Station led by Assistant Station Officer Haji Wahab bin Wahid were deployed to the scene.
Upon arrival, the firefighters were faced with a blaze in one room on the top floor while another two rooms were covered with thick smoke.
The fire was brought under control in four minutes. Water was obtained from fire hydrants nearby.
Two vehicles parked under the house were destroyed in the fire.
The estimated cost of damages is around BND45,000. The cause of the fire is believed to be unattended open burning where the fire spread to the storage below the house and then swept to the room on the top floor.
The FRD advised the public to avoid open burning, ensure that easily flammable materials are kept in safe places, switch off electrical appliances after use and not to leave them on for a long period.
The public is also reminded not to carry out wiring without approval from the authorities and ensure that the electrical wiring is in proper condition. It is also essential to equip houses with fire extinguishers, fire blanket and smoke detectors.
The public can contact the department on 995 in an emergency.
