A man involved in blackmail through social media was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment at Maraburong Prison and one caning on Wednesday by the Magistrate’s Court.
The case was based on a report received at the Sungai Liang Police Station leading to an investigation into the matter.
Investigations by the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) led to the arrest of Jefry bin Haji Ahmad, 35, who is unemployed. He was charged under Section 383 of the Penal Code.
The accused was also discovered to have committed the crime on April 14 after identifying the victim through social media.
He blackmailed the victim by asking for money and threatened to post the victim’s picture on social media if he was not paid.
According to the suspect, the proceeds from the victim have already been spent on online gambling.
The RBPF reaffirmed its commitment, noting that such crimes will be dealt in accordance with the law of the nation to ensure the safety of the residents.
