In the motion of thanks for His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah at the opening of the first meeting of the 16th Legislative Council (LegCo) session, the minister said that the monarch’s mention on a number of strides in the transformation of the telecommunications sector, in line with the Industrial Revolution 4.0 is very much appreciated as the country works strategically together to improve the quality of life and welfare of the people.

“The establishment of Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN) is geared towards achieving cost-saving effectiveness in infrastructure development and to allow for wider coverage in the country. At the same time, this also opens opportunities for service providers to be more competitive and focussed in their business strategy and services,” he said.

The competition will encourage more innovation and creativity among the service providers by giving more options to consumers, in line with technological advancements, he added.

He also mentioned that initiatives to enhance the telecommunication sector’s contribution to Brunei’s development are also actively carried out through strong collaboration between government and private sector agencies.

He also praised His Majesty’s call to take appropriate and effective action in opening up more employment opportunities in the country, to help curb the unemployment rate.

Through a Whole of Nation approach and in support of the policies of the Manpower Planning and Employment Council (MPEC), the minister also informed that the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) has implemented a number of initiatives to boost employment opportunities especially for locals.

He shared that among these iniatives are the AITI Apprenticeship that was implemented this year to boost the skills and marketability of locals in employment and entrepreneurship.
