Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) completed a perfect turnaround from finishing rock bottom during the first edition to champions of the 2nd University Cup 2020 after defeating Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) 2-1 in the final at the Master Alim Pool Café Brunei last weekend.

Last year, UTB endured a torrid outing after ending fifth out of five teams in a round-robin group behind eventual champions Politeknik Brunei, UBD, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and Kolej International Graduate Studies (KIGS).

Awangku Md Fauzi helped UBD chalk a point after winning his 9-ball singles match 7-3 against UTB’s Md Sallehin while Awangku Md Asyraf won his 8-ball singles match 7-1 against Juhan.

Victory was decided in favour of UTB in the 9-ball doubles as the pairing of Md Tadjul Ariffin and Md Najib overcame the duo of Haji Md Ramli and Chen Sheng 7-3.

UNISSA defended their position from last year in third place after they edged Politeknik Brunei ‘B’ 2-1 in a tense playoff.

UNISSA provided a clean sweep in the individual events after Md Adib Suimi won 7-1 against Md Syukrin in the 9-ball singles and Md Hadi Ikram collected a point after a 7-3 victory over Md Khairulamirin in the 8-ball singles.

The 9-ball doubles saw the pairing of Afiq Rafiqin and Md Raziq edge the duo of Md Aiman and Abdul Hakim 7-6 in a keenly-contested affair.

En route to the knock-out stages, UNISSA qualified as the winner of Group ‘A’ with Politeknik Brunei ‘B’ taking the runners-up spot. Meanwhile in Group ‘B’, UTB emerged winners while UBD settled for a runners-up finish. The tournament initially started with the preliminary rounds contested in a round-robin format on February 25 and concluded with the final on March 8.

Seven teams competed in the team event including Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Business Campus, Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology (CCCT) and Politeknik Brunei ‘A’.

Each team comprised five players including one in 9-ball, one in 8-ball and two players in 9-ball doubles as well as one substitute player. Secretary General of BCSA Pengiran Md Saiful Azri bin Pengiran Roslee presented the prizes.

The tournament was organised by Master Alim Pool Brunei and supported by the Brunei Darussalam Cue Sports Association (BSCA), Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
