The Magistrate’s Court yesterday sent a local man to jail for eight months after he pleaded guilty to theft in a building.

Mohammad Sahrul Nizam bin Sahari @ Saharin, 34, pleaded guilty to stealing a pair of earphones from Syarikat JM Trading Shop in Petani Mall, Tutong at 9.07pm on March 8.

DPP Ahmad Firdaus Mohammad further revealed in court that the defendant entered the shop that night and looked around when he came across a pair of True Wireless HZ+X03 Musky earphones on display.

The defendant waited for the shopkeeper to be busy and took the item, hiding it in his pocket.

He left the shop and sold the BND48 worth earphones to a friend for BND20.

The following day, the shopkeeper realised the earphones were missing and checked the CCTV. Footage showed the defendant in action. The shopkeeper lodged a police report which led to the defendant’s arrest.

The defendant said in investigations that he needed money to buy milk and diapers for his children.

Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid on sentencing the defendant took into account his early guilty plea and mitigation, but the court found that he had previous theft-related convictions which “aggravated his sentencing”.
