SMSA win futsal tournament for teachers

Sayyidina Ali Secondary School (SMSA) futsal team won a futsal tournament organised by Belait District’s Co-Curriculum Education Department (JPKK) for teachers after defeating GUT KB through penalties in the final match at the Mumong Sports Complex yesterday.

The skills showcased by both teams were on par as both teams scored a goal each over the course of the match. As the match went into overtime, the score was still tied, which proceeded to the penalty kick-off. SMSA won the penalties 6-5.

Eight teams split into two groups competed in the tournament – IBTE Jefri Bolkiah, GUT KB, SMSA and SUME FT in Group ‘A’; and JPI KB, SM PJN PHAB, JPKK Suka-Suka, and SBC 2020 in Group ‘B’.

Following the preliminary rounds, the top three teams in each group advanced into the quarter-finals. Group winners automatically advanced to the semi-finals, while second and third placed teams face one another.

JPI KB won 1-0 against IBTE Jefri Bolkiah to book a semi-final spot against Group ‘A’ winners SMSA. GUT KB crushed JBC 2020 3-1 and faced Group ‘B’ winners JPKK Suka-Suka in the semis.

In the semis, Group ‘A’ winners SMSA defeated JPI KB 2-0, while GUT KB won through penalty shootouts 3-2 against JPKK Suka-Suka.

JPKK Suka-Suka beat JPI KB 2-1 to claim third place.

Belait District’s Head of Co-Curriculum Education Haji Eady Sardi bin Pehin Datu Derma Sakti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Razak was the guest of honour.

SMSA goalkeeper Ishak Bakar was named best goalkeeper of the tournament, while Md Shaifuddin bin Naim from GUT KB received the best player award.
