Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) organised a half-day symposium in conjunction with Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month 2020 with the theme ‘Evolving Treatment Paradigms’ at Indera Samudra Grand Hall, The Empire Brunei yesterday.
The symposium was held for healthcare workers to raise awareness on colon and rectal cancers which have shown an increase over the years. The symposium also highlighted the role of the multi-disciplinary team discussions including specialists surgeons, oncologists, radiotherapists, radiologists, pathologists and specialty nurses to develop treatment plans for individual patients, and early detection and treatment.
Executive Director of PJSC Dr Haji Mazrul Adimin bin Haji Besar was the guest of honour at the event which saw over 200 participants.
Medical Director of PJSC and Consultant Medical Oncologist of The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC) Dato Seri Laila Jasa Dr Babu Sukumaran began the symposium with a presentation on ‘Colorectal Cancer Burden in Brunei Darussalam and Role of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT)’.
In the first session chaired by Senior Consultant Surgeon at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital Dato Yapp Kai San, Specialist Surgeon of the Surgical Unit at RIPAS Hospital Tan Lian Tat presented ‘Rectal Cancer Surgery’ followed by Consultant Radiation Oncologist of TBCC Dr Haji Jamsari bin Dato Haji Khalid who presented ‘Radiotherapy for Rectal Cancers: Long vs Short Course’.
The second session chaired by Consultant Medical Oncologist of TBCC Dr Ravi Sekhar Patnaik, Consultant Medical Oncologist of TBCC Dr Lu Shir Kiong presented ‘Treatment Beyond Chemotherapy’.
There was a panel discussion of colorectal cancer related cases by Consultant Medical Oncologist of TBCC Dr Raden Mas Jeffri bin Raden Mas Ismail and Specialist Surgeon of the Surgical Unit at RIPAS Hospital CL Chong.
