The Ministry of Defence (MinDef) and Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) held a Khatam Al-Quran ceremony at the Surau Ad-Difa’ of the ministry yesterday in conjunction with Brunei’s 36th National Day celebration.
Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof was the guest of honour.
Commander of the RBAF Major General Pengiran Dato Paduka Seri Aminan bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma’awiah were also present.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by Surah Ad-Dhuha and concluded with a mass Asar prayer.
Service commanders; deputy permanent secretary; directors; commandants; senior officers and RBAF personnel also attended.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) organised the 36 times Khatam Al-Quran ceremonies across all districts yesterday in conjunction with the 36th National Day celebration.
Some 2,000 youth participated.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin was the guest of honour at the event in the Brunei-Muara District held at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Silver Jubilee Mosque in Kampong Jangsak.
Legislative Council (LegCo) members Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pendikar Alam Dato Paduka Seri Haji Hasrin bin Dato Paduka Haji Sabtu and Yang Berhormat Haji Mohimin bin Haji Johari @ Jahari, Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) at the MCYS Pengiran Mohammad Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Community) at the MCYS Saidah binti Haji Wahid @ Burut, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the MCYS Dr Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah, as well as senior officers at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports were present.
Some 1,200 participants attended the event comprising youth from Youth Movements and Associations, the National Service Programme (PKBN), higher education institutions, Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) students, secondary schools and religious schools, youth clubs, mosque youth, mukim and village consultative councils, government and private agencies, as well as individual youth.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by the guest of honour, followed by the recitation of the verses from Al-Quran led by an Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB) student and the recitation of the Takhtim led by graduates from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and the Religious Teachers College University of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB).
Meanwhile, the Doa Khatam was led by the National Youth Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran Champion Abdull Muin bin Haji Abdul Hamid, while the Dikir Marhaban by a trainer from PKBN.
The event concluded with the recitation of Doa Allah Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara Brunei Darussalam by Mosque Affairs Officer at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Silver Jubilee Mosque Zulhazmi bin Salleh followed by a mass Zohor prayer.
In the Belait District, a similar ceremony was held at the Muhammad Jamalul Alam Mosque.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Energy Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya was the guest of honour.
Belait District Officer Ramlee bin Haji Jamudin and Head Religious Officer at the Belait District Religious Affairs Office Muhammad Aliyani bin Haji Ismail were also present.
Some 240 participated in the ceremony comprising students from government secondary schools, Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Campuses, and Arabic Preparatory School; as well as members form the Youth Development Centre, Youth and Sports Association, government departments, and mosque Takmir committee members.
In the Tutong District, it was held at the Ar-Rahim Mosque in Kampong Bukit Panggal.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health Haji Abdul Manap bin Othman was the guest of honour. Some 320 people participated.
Meanwhile, in the Temburong District, the event was held at the Utama Mohammad Salleh Mosque in Pekan Bangar. Commissioner of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Mohd Irwan bin Haji Hambali was the guest of honour. Some 276 people participated.
The event aimed to enliven the National Day celebration with beneficial activities, especially the recitation of Al-Quran, in line with making Brunei Darussalam a Zikir Nation, aside from enhancing the understanding and cooperation among agencies involved in the youth and community development and Tarbiyah, as well as encouraging youth and community involvement in religious activities.
