The Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 45-year-old Malaysian man to a year’s jail with three whippings yesterday for overstaying his welcome for 1,819 days in the country.
Soffian bin Abdul Rahman was arrested by Immigration Enforcement Officers in Operasi Pumpung JIPK 43/2020 on March 5 at a rented house in Kampong Kilanas.
Immigration prosecutor Pengiran Norarffin bin Pengiran Haji Hashim informed Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid that the defendant failed to produce his passport on demand by the officers as he claimed he had lost it since 2017.
Investigations revealed records showing that the defendant had last entered Brunei on February 11, 2015 through the Kuala Lurah Control Post and given a visit pass valid up until March 13, 2015.
No records showed any extensions of the visit pass.
