i-Ready Programme continuously reviewed

Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah explained that the Manpower Planning and Employment Council (MPEC) Secretariat continuously monitors the efficacy of the i-Ready Programme towards achieving the objectives of the apprentice programme aimed to enhance the marketability and employability of the locals.

The minister said this in response to a question raised by Legislative Council Member Yang Berhormat Nik Hafimi binti Abdul Haadii on the review of the i-Ready scheme and its suitability to produce a positive outcome.

The MPEC Secretariat is also reviewing the issue of misuse of the programme by a number of companies, the minister added.

“This includes reducing worker’s salary or terminating them due to dependence on the payment of i-Ready allowances.

“This year, up to February 15, a total of 58 apprentices have been placed in several companies with three of them being recruited to a permanent position, while, 48 out of 248 apprentices acquired permanent position at the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).”

Speaking on the development in the field of entrepreneurship, the minister shared that a group of seven graduates who are following the i-Ready Programme have successfully set up their own business.

The minister urged the locals including the i-Ready apprentices to venture into entrepreneurship programme and make use of the existing platform including programmes carried out by DARe (Darussalam Enterprises) and LiveWIRE Brunei.
