KUALA LUMPUR (BERNAMA) – National number one men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, put up a commendable performance to book their place in the last eight of the 2020 All-England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham, England on Thursday night.
National number one men’s singles shuttler, Lee Zii Jia, also made it through to the next round after defeating young Chinese player, Lu Guang Zu 21-10 and 21-16.
Chia and Soh, the world number 10 pair, met with stiff resistance from Taiwanese duo, Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han, before securing a 24-22 and 21-17 win in the second round match which lasted about 48 minutes, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
A tough task awaits the eight seeds as they will meet world number one pair, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia for a place in the semi-finals.
Marcus and Kevin Sanjaya are through to the quarter-finals after whitewashing Ou Xuan Yi and Zhang Nan of China with a 21-9 and 21-15 win.
Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi, however, crashed out from the USD1.1 million tournament after losing 19-21 and 16-21 to seventh seeds, Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Taiwan.
