An Indonesian man was sentenced to 11 months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after failing to pay a BND10,800 fine for the possession of smuggled cigarettes.
Bustomi, 25, was accused of possessing 14 cartons and four packs of cigarettes at a staff quarters at Eng Huat Building, Kampong Pengkalan Gadong during a raid on February 13 at about 2.30am.
Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid handed down the sentence to Bustomi after he pleaded guilty to the charge. In another court room, permanent resident Cheu Ying Choi, 42, was fined BND5,000 after he pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing 960 cans of alcoholic beverages in his car. Magistrate Pengiran Hazirah binti Pengiran Haji Mohd Yusof gave Cheu a grace period until August 29 to settle the fine, or face five months in prison. Cheu was accused of having undeclared alcohol during inspection at the Sungai Tujoh Control Post on January 22 at about 7am.
