Tabuan will enter the title decider with a two- point advantage over rivals DPMM FC after a 3-0 win over Indera SC moved them to the top of the NFABD Under-16 Youth League at the NFABD Football Field yesterday.
The national youth development team replaced the Jerudong-based side after winning their game-in-hand, prompting a winner-take-all for their title showdown at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium tomorrow.
With the first meeting between the two unbeaten teams ended in a stalemate, Tabuan only need a repeat of the result to secure the title while only a win will do for DPMM FC.
Tabuan striker Mohd Syaherrul Affendy bin Md Syahmirul Nizam continued his prolific form with a double to make it a staggering 15 goals in his last five league appearances.
Leading the line to perfection, the forward provided real threat going forward and his first glimpses of the goal saw him hit the side-netting, a reminder of what was to come.
On the other end of the pitch, Indera created their best opportunity of the game after striker Muhd Sharafil Zul Izzad bin Sahrizam managed a shot which cleared the bar.
While it seemed to be a routine catch, the Indera SC goalkeeper was a relieved individual when he dropped a misjudged cross by Tabuan’s Mohd Hasnol bin Abdullah Haslan after the ball ended wide off the target.
Tabuan were the busier of the two sides as Ahmad Danish Hakim bin Azami’s shot drifted wide following a cutback from Mohd Syaherrul.
The combination of duo Awangku Md Idzzaham Alwshahmezan bin Pengiran Metali and Mohd Syaherrul Affendy has proven effective this season but this time the latter could not direct the ball on target following a decent cross by the former.
The next opportunity fell to Tabuan’s Awangku Md Ali Munawwar bin Pengiran Abdul Rahman who scuffed his shot wide after Awangku Md Idzzaham dazzled his way on the flanks to provide an inviting cross.
A series of opportunities passed by as Mohd Syaherrul came close towards finding the target after he received a pass from a teammate.
However, the in-form forward was not to be denied as he unleashed a stunning strike two minutes before the breather.
Mohd Syaherrul Affendy doubled his tally in the 43rd minute before teammate Awangku Md Idzzaham completed the scoring with his goal six minutes from time.
