Students of Jigsaw Primary School (JPS) were all dressed in the auspicious colour of red to usher in the Year of the Rat on Monday with the Chinese New Year celebration at the school hall both in the morning and afternoon sessions.

The morning celebration was attended by Education Officer at the Private Education Section, Ministry of Education Kassim as the event’s guest of honour.

Also present were Principal and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of JPS Helen Chin and Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Medical Advisor of JPS Dr Jimmy Chin. Approximately 800 students attended both sessions and some 250 red packets were handed out to the cultural dances performers and the lion dancers. Red packets were also given out to the Best Handmade Card winners for Kindergarten, Lower Primary and Upper Primary students, Best Dressed winners for the Kindergarten, Lower Primary and Upper Primary students as well as teachers and staff. Oranges were also given out to the students and members to celebrate the occasion.

The celebration and performance is part of the school’s effort to instil the culture of the Chinese community. The event commenced with the showcasing of a short video about the history of the occasion. The lion dance performance by the students cultivated togetherness and sense of living in harmony in a multicultural society. Most importantly it symbolised children’s persistence and strength in achieving their goals in life.

JPS will continue to nurture its students, teachers and staff to uphold the principles of living in peace by the inclusion of different races, status and religion, and at the same time by upholding the national philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy.
