In marking a momentous milestone reached by the school’s long lineage, a celebration and unveiling of a new commemorative banner was held by St John’s School, Kuala Belait yesterday.

Over 800 students from Kindergarten to Year 11 of the school accompanied by teachers, staff, parents and guardians attended.

Following the singing of the national anthem and school song, an opening speech was given by Chairman of the school’s Board of Governors Lee Yin Fah.

Lee expressed his pleasure for the presence of all to celebrate the significant milestone; further noting that it represents a great achievement for the school providing quality education for 90 years since 1930.

“St John’s School is one of the oldest schools in Brunei, which started just after the discovery of the Seria Oil Field in 1929,” he explained.

Since then, the school has grown and played a significant role in education within the Belait District community; as well as supporting the development of the nation. “What started as a private English primary school has evolved to delivering the National Education System for the 21st Century (SPN21), contributing toward the nation’s Vision 2035 and beyond,” he continued.

In addition, he also believed that the school was able to achieve its status as one of the renowned private schools delivering several generations of successful Bruneians locals as well as children of expatriates working in Brunei due to the continuous support given over the course of 90 years.

“No doubt there will be more challenges in the future, but we believe with St John’s School’s strong will and determination; we will see through many storms and challenges to deliver educational excellence through ‘Service and Love’, our school motto,” he said.

He then announced that the theme for the school’s 90th anniversary is ‘Celebrating the Past, Building the Future’; noting that it is in line with their belief in learning from the past, celebrating the successes, and moving forward to build a better future.
