A local couple was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to settle a BND800 fine each, or serve three weeks’ jail in default of payment, for shoplifting jars of Nutella spread.

Mohamad Arifin bin Mohd Tarip and Norimah binti Haji Md Yusof, both aged 32 and unemployed, committed the offence at 9am on December 20, 2019 at a supermarket in Sengkurong where it was caught on CCTV.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli’s facts of the case stated that the supermarket’s manager was doing his rounds at 2.30pm the same day when he came across an empty box of Nutella and checked if anyone had bought them all at once.

When the employees denied knowledge, he grew suspicious and went to check the CCTV and found a footage showing the defendants’ actions.

The manager lodged a police report with the aid of the CCTV footage showing Mohamad Arifin first placing six jars of Nutella 680grammes into a shopping basket.

It was followed by Norimah covering Mohamad Arifin while he shoplifted six jars of Nutella 680grammes in his pants and a bag while Norimah paid some other food items following which both fled the scene.

Magistrate Kamaliah Fadhilah binti Haji Ibrahim presided.
