Serial thief jailed under Syariah law

The Syariah High Court convicted a local man with Sariqah (theft) under Section 55 (3) (b) of the Syariah Criminal Penal Code 2013.

Mohammad Alipah bin Lamat was convicted of stealing a long sleeve jacket at a shop at The Mall in Gadong on December 4, 2019, and was sentenced to four months imprisonment.

In the second case, the defendant was convicted of stealing an iPhone XS at a shop at The Mall on December 20, 2019. For this, he was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment.

In carrying out the sentencing, the court took into account his previous criminal record where he committed 10 thefts.

The man’s jail sentences are effective from the date of arrest on December 28, 2019.

The sentences run concurrently for 12 months and the court ordered for the stolen items to be returned to the rightful owners.

The Syariah High Court judge warned that stealing is a serious offence in Islam.

Syar’ie prosecutor of the Syar’ie Prosecution Division, Ministry of Religious Affairs prosecuted the case.
