The Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam (MPABD) said that there was no casualties in the water taxi incident where a video and photo went viral on social media recently.
The incident occurred at noon on December 25, 2019 where the seven tourists – four men and three women – from Germany sustained no injuries. They alighted the boat onto the Sungai Lampai Jetty.
Initial investigations showed that the incident was caused by over-boarding of passengers onto the boat piloted by Asri bin Taram @ Rahman who did not register his water taxi and did not carry any safety equipment onboard at the time.
Asri was also found to not possess a Sijil Kecekapan Kelas 9 (Terhad).
In relation to the incident, the MPABD reminded the public, especially boat operators to always carry and wear life jackets while operating their boats.
The MPABD will be taking action against Asri whose incident is viewed as a serious one, especially when it involved risking the public’s lives.
