The Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association plays a role in helping economic development through the involvement of its members in the field of business and entrepreneurship, said Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong.
“They also demonstrated care through involvement in social and welfare activities in the country such as during His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s birthday celebration, Brunei Darussalam National Day celebration and other programmes organised by NGOs. Their involvement shows the spirit of patriotism and I hope that the ties will continue to grow.
He made these remarks during the installation ceremony for the new executive committee for the 9th Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association and 8th Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association’s Youth Committee at the Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association premises yesterday.
The minister added, “I am happy to witness the Hokkien community residing in the country living in a harmonious environment and respecting the values of culture and Malay Islamic Monarchy in the country.
“I believe that the Hokkien Association is able to venture into economic activities within the country or become partners with foreign investors to carry out development plans in the country.
“With the association’s vast and successful business experience, I hope it can help develop micro, small and medium enterprise through guidance and examples to young entrepreneurs in the country.”
Following a successful term, Lim Han Chiong was re-elected Chairman to lead the Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association for 2020 to 2022.
He will be assisted by Deputy Chairman Lim Sooi Tiong and eight vice chairmen – Lee Eng Ching, Goh Kim Tian, Lim Peh Beng, Tan Chin Wan, Goh Koh Leong, Peng Yan Hoe, Lim Sui Tian and Lim Teck Hock.
The post of supervisor went to Lim Eng Loke while the Secretary General is Hong Kim Seng. Holding the Treasurer post is Chin Lee Jin.
Meanwhile, Lim Han Chiong recalled the achievements and activities carried out by the Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association for the past years. He said, “The Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association was established in 1998 with the main objectives of maintaining loyalty to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and comply with the laws and policies of Brunei Darussalam.
“The association also strives to maintain good relationships and harmony while preserving members’ interests; provide assistance to members in the fields of welfare, education and social matters including assistance in the burial affairs, provide members with business information and opportunities; promote friendship and strengthen ties with other Hokkien Associations through mutual contact and visits.”
To date, he revealed the membership of the Hokkien Association has increased drastically from 168 to 1,150 members. The harmonious relationship between the Executive Committee and members of the association has contributes to the association’s strength.
Chua Teng Kiat was elected the 8th Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association’s Youth Committee Head of Youth, and assisted by Deputy Heads of Youth – Lim Hock Thye and Lim Eng Hua. Secretary General went to Lim Sze Nee while Lim Sei Chin holds the Treasurer’s post.
Chua Teng Kiat said the Youth Committee has pledged to continue carry out duties and come up with new strategies.
“I hope that we can attract more outstanding and energetic Hokkien youth to join us. I would like to remind executive committee members to be responsible and carry your tasks diligently. In addition to performing our duties, we also hope that everyone can spend more time and effort to attend future meetings and activities.”
