Locals get jail time in theft cases

A 40-year-old local man was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for two charges of theft committed within the span of less than two months.

Suhardy bin Haji Abdullah pleaded guilty and was convicted by Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman.

DPP Sabrina binti Mahmud’s said on January 9, 2019, at 4pm, the victim arrived for work at a restaurant in Sungai Hanching and was informed by a staff that the restaurant’s waterjet compressor and storage container had been stolen.

Footage from CCTV showed two men approaching the restaurant, stole the items and loaded it into their vehicle.

The victim reported the incident to the police.

Investigations revealed the involvement of the defendant and Mohamad Azri.

On the same day, Mohamad Azri met the defendant at his house and went to another person’s house with the stolen items.

The defendant instructed the third person to sell the Hitachi waterjet compressor and storage container in exchange for methamphetamine drug.

Meanwhile, on February 24, 2019, a tyre shop worker in Kampong Salambigar was informed by a barber, who works nearby, who saw two men parked in front of his shop and took two tyres.

The tyre shop worker then tried to give chase, but was unsuccessful. The tyre shop worker identified the missing items, informed his employer and lodged a police report.

Investigations led to the arrest of the defendant and Haji Mohammad Amirnuddin bin Haji Abdul Momin. The police recovered the tyres, worth BND90, from the defendant’s house.
