17 Millennium babies in Brunei

Ishan Ibrahim and Akhtar

JANUARY 3, 2000 – Norzan Haji Meludin, 32, was certainly a very proud mother just seven minutes into the new millennium – she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy weighing 3.655kg. She was admitted to RIPAS Hospital at 1.30am on December 31, 1999. The baby was the first Bruneian to be born this new year, 2000.

“I did not expect to give birth on New Year’s Day, because I was due on December 29, 1999. When I gave birth, the nurses told me that I was the first one – I was so happy and I did not feel any pain at all,” she said.

So was the pregnancy planned at all?

“Well, actually no. But my hubby and I said when our first child Mohammad Najibuddin Hakim reaches a year old, we will have another baby,” she explained.

And the name of the new kid on the block?

“We have thought of a name, but since the Acting Minister of Health Pehin Dato Haji Abdul Aziz recited the Azan prayer to our baby, we might name him after the minister,” said proud dad Mohammad Midun bin Abdullah.

So did it matter if it was a boy or a girl?

“No, of course not. We now have two boys, I guess it is hereditary because on my husband’s side he has three brothers and two sisters,” a happy Norzan said.

She returned home yesterday to her Kampong Penanjong home in Tutong bringing a new member to the family. It was certainly a busy New Year’s day for the maternity nurses, as 16 other equally proud mothers gave birth.

The roll call included Nisbah binti Haji Metussin, 36, to a baby boy, Siti Zubaidah, 37 (girl), Hajah Zaleha, 28 (girl), Nurleliah, 24 (boy), Norizan Abdul Wahab (girl), Khadija Mohd A Rahman Al-Zarafi from Oman (boy), Rohaya Mokhtar (boy), Zaituna Edong (boy), Rosli Musa (girl), Hajah Asmiah Buntan (boy), Rosmizah Abdullah (boy) and Maslina Ali to a baby girl.

From the Tutong District, there are only two additions to the population. Proud Norsenani Mohd Hamdan, 25, gave birth to a baby boy weighing in at 3.330kg and Malati Tunggui to a baby girl weighing in at 3.2kg.

While the Belait District received their new residents when four mothers gave birth at the Suri Seri Begawan.

The proud mothers are Mariam Kifrawi, 36, who gave birth to a baby boy at the Sungai Liang, Fatimah Ahmad (boy), Juliana anak Musa (girl) and Ampuan Nizaha Ampuan Haji Ismail to a baby boy.

In all 17 Millennium infants consisting nine males and eight females were born within 24 hours at RIPAS Hospital from mid Saturday morning until the next day.
