JPES conducts annual census for MSMEs

The Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES), Ministry of Finance and Economy is conducting the Annual Census of Enterprises (ACE) 2019 for Brunei Darussalam.

Its main objective is to collect latest information on the profile and performance of business enterprises in the private sector, particularly the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The census covers active companies and businesses in the country and collects information on the type of economic activity, number of employees, revenue and expenditure of the businesses 2018 and 2019.

It is conducted under the Statistics Act, Chapter 81 from the Laws of Brunei Darussalam. JPES assures companies and businesses involved that the information collected during the census will be kept strictly confidential and will be used for statistical purposes only.

The questionnaires are distributed to companies and businesses by post, e-mail and visits to business premises by census fieldworkers.

These fieldworkers will also assist and provide guidance to businesses if they face difficulties in providing the required information.

The questionnaire can also be downloaded from JPES’s website. The closing date for returning the questionnaires to JPES is February 29.

Failure or reluctance to give the required information or furnishing false particulars is an offence under Section 9, Statistics Act, which carries a penalty of a fine of BND4,000.

The census results will provide comprehensive and up-to-date information on the profile of businesses to assist planning, research and policy making.

The companies and businesses can also utilise the results in planning and expanding their business activities and strategies.
