A community-centred development approach towards economic diversification, the One Village, One Product (1K1P) initiative was first implemented in Brunei in the early 90s. However, it became prominent with the creation of several projects years later.
1K1P, which amongst its aims looks to encourage the culture of self-employment, covers products under various categories, namely food and beverage, handicraft, services and eco-tourism, agriculture, livestock and fishery.
The initiative also serves to increase the community spirit and interest in local products, to focus on brand values of local villages’ products and to promote a community-based rural development which utilises local resources.
It also helps provide jobs and enhances self-sufficiency in the community; strengthens unity and teamwork; promotes innovation and creativity through the manufacturing of products and services; and optimises the use of local resources.
The number of villages participating in the production of 1K1P initiative products has increased over the years with each village producing at least one signature product representing the village.
One such signature product is a health drink from Kampong Panchong, Tutong that is produced using lemongrass.
As Fasilah binti Tuah of Syarikat Serai Jati Enterprise explained, lemongrass is known for its anti-oxidant properties that helps prevent cancers as well as detoxification properties that increase the amount and frequency of urination, while at the same time cleaning the digestive organs, liver, pancreas and kidneys in a human body.
Having the knowledge of these benefits from the plant, Fasilah shared that they decided to share their knowledge with the community and, after confirming the health benefits through their research and references, successfully produced their first product – lemongrass powder.
The enterprise was established in 2016, under the Women’s Bureau of the Kampong Panchong Village Consultative Council and, being set under the bureau’s initiative, they had the honour to have the product as one under the 1K1P initiative for Kampong Panchong, said Fasilah.
“Our initiative was supported by the Tutong District Office and inaugurated on March 12, 2017, by Haji Adnan bin Haji Adam as the Assistant Tutong District Officer, Ministry of Home Affairs at that time,” she added.
Fasilah said that a glass of lemongrass juice is effective in lowering blood pressure, stimulating blood circulation and eliminates blood pressure, while women with menstrual pain problems and nausea can have boiled lemongrass leaves as a form of tea to help feel refreshed and cool.
Currently, the production is home-based at the resident of the late Tuah bin Dua, who gave permission to use his house as the processing place for products of 1K1P for the Women’s Bureau.
Distribution is done through participation in expos organised by the Tutong District Office such as the Tutongku Ceria. The Women’s Bureau is set to expand the marketing of the lemongrass powder to departmental stores. Feedback has been very positive and consumers also feel it is convenient to use the powder as part of their cooking needs.
Meanwhile, statistics recorded on 1K1P last year saw a rise in sales with a total of BND802,860 compared to BND692,196 in 2018 and the numbers of community participation have also risen from the 1,003 people in 2018 to a total of 1,057 last year.
The total number of 1K1P entrepreneurs has also increased from 127 people in 2018 to 141 people in 2019 and the same goes for the total number of products under 1K1P, which saw an increase to 253 products last year compared to 222 products in 2018.
