Call for senior citizens to join ‘Wargamas’

A newly established NGO association, Wargamas, aims to unite all senior citizens in the country so that they can contribute and support the development, well-being and progress of the nation.

The association also hopes to attract future senior citizen aged 40 years and above to join the organisation.

The call was made by its President Pengiran Haji Mohd Salleh bin Pengiran Haji Kamaluddin at a press conference yesterday at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Also present were Deputy President Haji Abdul Hakim bin Haji Mohd Yassin, Vice President (Brunei-Muara District) Haji Mohd Yassin bin Awang Said, Vice President (Belait District) Haji David @ Haji Muhammad Abu Daud bin Haji Kassim, Vice President (Tutong District) Haji Abdul Kani bin Haji Mohd Said and Vice President (Temburong District) Haji Mohiddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Secretary General Haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Mohd Don and Treasurer Haji Awang bin Haji Awang Damit.

Pengiran Haji Mohd Salleh said, “Wargamas was officially approved by Registrar of Societies on August 24, 2019. We want to attract more senior citizens (60 years old and above) and soon to be senior citizens (aged 40 years to 60 years old) to join our organisation. Currently there are some 50,000 senior citizens in the country and we hope to reach the target of 10,000 senior citizen members by end of this year.”

Pengiran Haji Mohd Salleh added, “Senior citizens’ invaluable experiences and skills will help to achieve Vision 2035.

“The establishment of this association is to care for the needs of senior citizens but also in line with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah during the 35th National Day celebration 2019, that while the youth are being focussed upon, the welfare of senior citizens should not be neglected, as they need vital support and care.”

He also announced that an Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday at the Theatre hall of Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium to elect the new administrative executive committees of the organisation.

All members of Wargamas are urged to attend the meeting which is set to start from 9am onwards.
