Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) launched its first children’s book series titled ‘BSP Energy Series’ at Panaga Primary School in Seria yesterday.

Present were the guests of honour, Leader of Cluster 6 Schools Asmah binti Tengah and Managing Director of BSP Dr Ceri M Powell.

Also present were school leaders from public and private schools in the Belait District as well as BSP officials and students from Panaga Primary School.

The BSP Energy Series has been published in-conjunction with BSP’s 90th anniversary which falls on April 5, 2019. The three-part book series entails the adventure of five friends, who call themselves the Science Squad, to learn about the discovery of oil and gas along with the progress it brings for the future generations set in a local perspective. With the help of their special jet and their feathered friend, Roo (a hornbill), the squad finds out about oil and gas and where it comes from, the journey it goes on and how it is used. “The series is a labour of love. It is the work of many Subject Matter Experts, bright and enthusiastic kids who contributed their opinions and passionate writers in their endeavour to raise awareness on Energy and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics),” said Dr Powell in her remarks.

“Each book is dedicated to the previous generations of BSP heroes who have paved the way to ensure BSP continues to fuel Brunei’s future, the current BSP staff who are tirelessly working today for our tomorrow, and our future leaders.”

She noted that the book series is intended for children from nine to 11 years old but hopes that it will also appeal to all age groups.

“I hope that this series will help nurture interest for STEM in our young students, to facilitate the country’s ambition to have a diversified economy propelled by a skilled, educated workforce – future leaders who will be made from our bright children and students of today,” Dr Powell added.

The ceremony also saw the presentation of the book series to some 30 school leaders from the district. Each school will receive a total of 30 copies. Shortly after the launching event, those present viewed a science demonstration while students participated in a colouring session as well as a book reading session led by Dr Powell.

The three-part ‘BSP Energy Series’ will also be distributed to other schools in the near future and ultimately be available nationwide.
