BICTA 2020 competition opens

One of the ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) in encouraging innovation is the Brunei Info-Communication Technology Awards (BICTA). BICTA is an annual ICT competition aimed to stimulate innovation and creativity in the ICT among individuals, students and businesses including small and medium enterprises (SMEs), jointly organised by MTIC, Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and InfoCom Federation Brunei (IFB).

BICTA is also supported by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), DARe (Darussalam Enterprise) and Brunei Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO).

BICTA 2020 carries the theme ‘Smart Nation through Digital Transformation’ which describes the move towards a Smart Nation focussing on the development of new disruptive technology for digital transformation of the society and economy.

For Brunei Darussalam, the move will aim to take full advantage of the new digital technology effectively and innovatively to achieve the national Vision 2035.

This year’s BICTA opening was announced by MTIC during a press conference at Level 1, Auditorium, Design & Technology Building, Anggerek Desa Technology Park yesterday.

Present at the press conference was Permanent Secretary at the MTIC, as Co-Chairman I of the BICTA 2020 Steering Committee Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof. In his opening remarks at the press conference yesterday, Haji Mohammad Nazri announced that BICTA 2020 is the year of the Royal Patron Award, which gives recognition to the best out of the best overall winners for the competition and will be presented during the BICTA 2020 Awards Ceremony to be held later this year.

The Royal Patron of BICTA is His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office. Also present were Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocommunications, Cybersecurity, Strategy and Corporate) at the MTIC Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim; Chairman of IFB as Co-Chairman II of the BICTA 2020 Steering Committee Sheikh Abas bin Sheikh Mohamad; Acting Chief Executive of AITI Haji Jailani bin Haji Buntar, and Chief Judge of BICTA 2020 Pengiran Sarimah binti Pengiran Haji Abdul Latiff.

With the objective to stimulate innovation and creativity in ICT, BICTA 2020 is open for participation in three categories – School Category, which is open for individuals or groups of students in Year 7 until Year 11; the Tertiary Category for individuals or groups of students in Year 12 until undergraduates; and the ICT Industry Category for individuals or groups, start-ups, companies and government entities. Each winner for the above categories will receive cash prizes of BND3,000, BND7,000 and BND10,000 respectively. There will also be five Special Awards, – Research and Development Project, Big Data Analytics Technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology, Internet of Things (IoT) Technology and Start-up. In preparation for the BICTA 2020 competition, the organising committee will run BICTA Plus, a bootcamp programme which serves as a platform for BICTA participants to benefit from mentorship and specialised programmes conducted by experts.

BICTA Plus covers a wide array of topics, ranging from emerging technologies, ideation and validation, business plans, intellectual property and developing market-ready products which will enable participants to enhance their capacities and skills as well as improve their product quality prior to competing. BICTA is a component of the Asia-Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards where the quality and categories provided are in-line with APICTA Standards.

Brunei Darussalam’s participation in APICTA since 2008 brought two awards and 27 merit awards to date.

This year’s BICTA winners will represent Brunei Darussalam in the APICTA which will be held in Penang, Malaysia. All businesses, secondary and tertiary schools, government agencies as well as local individuals having their own ICT products and services are encouraged to participate.
