The results of the 2019 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Photo Contest were revealed in December.

As was announced by the APEC Secretariat, the winner of the APEC Photo Contest 2019 also won the most votes for the Popular Choice Award category.

A press release on the APEC Secretariat website explained that the winning photograph, which was taken by Danilo Victoriano from the Philippines, captured several themes of Chile’s year as APEC host economy. These included empowering women in the economy and fostering a digital society. It was shared that the photograph received the most ‘likes’ and votes through the APEC website.

Second prize went to Arif Widodo for his photograph of schoolboys planting trees in Indonesia while third prize went to Klienne Eco for a photograph titled, ‘No Cash No Problem’.

The winners were announced by Chair of APEC 2019 Senior Officials Mathias Francke during the Concluding Senior Officials’ Meeting in Singapore.

“The APEC Photo Contest reflects the forum’s commitment to put people at the front and center of its work,” said the Chair of APEC 2019 Senior Officials. “The winning photo expresses the spirit that Chile sought to highlight this year of connecting people to build a better and more inclusive future for all.”

APEC is a regional economic forum established in 1989 and has 21 members (including Brunei Darussalam). APEC aims to create greater prosperity for the people of the region by promoting balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and secure growth and by accelerating regional economic integration. Malaysia will host APEC in 2020.

APEC Photo Contest was open to citizens or residents of APEC’s 21 member economies. Photo submissions were judged based on their interpretation of APEC 2019’s priorities, as well as the photographs’ composition, quality, and creativity. Entries had to be taken by a traditional camera, including a digital camera, or by a mobile phone.

The winners were selected by a panel of judges that comprised the Chair of APEC 2019 Senior Officials, APEC Secretariat Executive Director Dr Rebecca Sta Maria, leading photojournalists Guy Wenborne from Chile and Hong Kong-based Palani Mohan, and North America Photo Editor for Agence France Presse Eric Baradat.

The Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat said, “Photographers from across the region continue to translate APEC’s policy priorities into captivating images. The APEC Photo Contest allows the public to share their views. APEC will continue to foster this vital two-way conversation.”

In addition, the Influencer Award, which is given to a photograph entry submitted to APEC’s Instagram account, went to Adi Dharmawan for a photograph titled ‘Happy Working’.
